Reflection

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

I am writing my last blog to you guys before I upload my finish CCR ( which I finished yesterday) and my finished film opener!!!! Looking back at this process, I have learned a lot about myself and the things I am able to do with a mindset. I feel extremely lucky to get the opportunity to have worked on this project. I especially and so lucky to have gotten to work with an incredible team that has supported each other through every single hardship, mistake, obstacle, and success. I am proud of the work that we created and can't wait to see what the world thinks of it! I also want to thank everyone who has helped my group and I create this film. To the actors, to the people who lent us their homes, and to the people that bought us food on set. I appreciate each and everyone of you and this project would not have become a reality if it wasn't for you! With that said, this is the last time you will hear from me. I hope these blogs were useful to anyone. Until next time.....

Got Music Approval....

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

[Disclaimer: this is not going to be a very long blog] I have some good news to report! Just a couple minutes ago, the producer of the beat called Dazed & Confused" Juice Wrld x YNW Melly x Trippie Redd type just reached out to me and told me I could use the beat for the video! That means that today in class, my group has to work hard to edit out the music in the video and clean up the montage scene and then our video will be finished! It also means that all our music is now all ROYALTY FREE!!!! Today, I am also going to be starting my CCR.

Music Change to Beginning of Film Opener

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

I think I have found alternative music to use in the beginning of our film opening during the montage scene of our film opener. I found a trap beat on Youtube created by a small local music producer, which is not copyrighted. The beat is called Dazed & Confused" Juice Wrld x YNW Melly x Trippie Redd type beat. I have attached a link to the beat below. I reached out to the creator of the beat just to let him know we would be using the beat he created and, to be politically correct, I asked if we could use it! I will let you guys know if he gets back to me. I just emailed him, but after I publish this blog I will reach out to him on all his social media platforms.

Viewing Party

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

I also wanted to fill you guys in on something that I am trying to plan. I am so proud of the film opener that my group is producing that I am putting together a viewing party for the film opening. I plan to invite some of my family members and friends one weekend over to my house to watch the opening. I think I am going to have the viewing party on April 20th. I even am going to try to challenge myself by cooking for everyone for the event because I really have to learn how to cook before I go off to college in a couple months. I will let you guys know if this event works out!

Making Changes to the First Edit

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

Today, is my first day back from spring break and it feels really good to get back into the groove with school. Today, I am meeting with my group to look over the edit we did over the break with the video. As of right now, I think there are only three things that we really need to change. I think we only need to change the background music during the montage scene because that music isn't royalty free and the individuals who own the rights to the music aren't relying to my emails. I found another song that could work well for that scene, so all I think we are gonna have to do is import the new song onto the timeline and shorten/lengthen some of the clips on the montage scene to flow better with the music. I also think we should add an establishing shot of the house before we have the first shot of the main character's eyes opening. Besides these two things the only thing I think we have left to do in terms of editing is maybe clean up the cuts and audio in the bedroom fighting scene and car crash.

Today, during my groups meeting I am also going to start working on my critical reflection and making sure my group members are keeping up with their blogs. I also plan to try to make a flyer for the film.

Getting Critiques on Our First Cut

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

My group meet up the day after we finished making the first cut of our portfolio video. We decided that in order to make the video better we should send it to some of our friends and family members to get their opinion on what we should change or fix. I attached the videos of the people we sent the video to below.

2+2= First Cut Finished

hDear Passionate Media Followers,

Last night at about 12am a fellow group member and I finished the first cut of our film opener. It took us 2 days and about 4-6 hours to finish this first edit. To be honest, going into this, I didn't think it would take this much work. We had to import all the clips to Premier Pro, cut all the clips together on multiple timelines, add all the effects to each clip, add all the texts to certain parts of the film, add color corrections and color graded each scene, edited and even created some of the audio, and add the 8mm film grade overlays. Let me tell you guys.... it was a mission and a half. We decided to break up the edit into three timelines. The first timeline was the montage scene of Miami, the second was the arguing scene between the main character and his mother, and the last timeline was the car crash scene. I have attached pictures of all three time lines we edited the film on below.

Arguing scene between main character and mother^

Also, after we finished editing,  I capture our reaction to watching the video for the first time. I decided to only upload the ending of the reaction video because we don't really say or do anything in the start of the reaction video.

Before I conclude this blog,  I want to explain why I titled this blog 2+2= First Cut Finished. The reason I did this was because at the start of this project my teacher showed us a Ted talk. I don't remember the name of the Ted talk or who even gave the speech, but through this whole process I have always remembered that the speaker said, "don't give the audience the 2 plus 2 equals four.  Just give them the 2 plus 2. " After watching this I knew that the speaker meant that films shouldn't just spell everything out for the viewer, they should allow the viewer to put things together in the film themselves, but to me this statement meant so much more. To me, this meant that when creating a film one should always try to dig a little deeper. Always try to make films that have a message and a purpose in this world. Most importantly, when making a film don't take the easy way out. Always try to make something that your proud of and don't give up when times get hard. This one quote as followed my through this whole process and I think this quote was one of the reasons my group decided to stick with making this film opener instead of the other one.  My group could have just shot this whole film on our phones, slapped a couple clips together in iMovie and be done with the whole film in one day, but we dug a little deeper and worked a little harder to make a film that we are all very proud to have made. I can't wait to show all my classmates and my teacher this film. I think I may even create a separate blog showing all my friends reactions/critiques to seeing the film for the first time. Well that is all I have for today. I will talk to you guys again soon!

Sincerely,
Matthew Liebman

Our Title is......

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

This is not going to be a very long blog because I am basically just going to tell you guys what the name of our film is and why we chose that particular name.

So.......without further further ado the title of our film is: FRICTION. We decide to name our film this because our film is about a boy using skateboarding as an outlet to get away from the abusive home he lives in. We thought this name went great with the whole skate boarding part of the film because friction is needed so individuals don't fall off their skateboards because skate shoes and the top of skate boarder are specially designed so that there is an increase in friction. Furthermore, we also chose this name because tension between two moving things causes friction and there is a lot of tension between the main character his parents.

As shown, friction is the perfect word that could sum up our whole film. I was surprised that it only took my group about 10 minutes of brainstorming names until we came up with this one today. I think I am going to make a film poster with the title later this week. If I end up making one, I will attach it to this blog later in the week.

Well that's all I have for you guys today. As I said, this blog was going to be short and sweet. Tomorrow, we are going to continue editing the film. I am excited to update you guys on how the editing process goes.

I got bored today, so I just made the poster instead of making it later in the week.....

The 2nd Journey has begun.....

Dear Passionate Media Followers,

Today, we started the first step in editing the footage we shoot for our film opener last weekend. To be totally honest, during the first steps of editing I am feeling a lot of pressure and anxiety. I believe I am feeling this because  my group has worked incredible hard to get actors to act in the video, locations to shoot the video, extremely expensive camera equipment to capture our story through a lens, and have asked people to really go out on a limb to help us make this film possible. I think these feelings are more intense now because I know   this is the make or break moment. If we can't put all the puzzle pieces (video clips) together in the correct order our video will come out a complete flop and I definitely feel like we would let down all the people that helped us to bring this idea to life. Maybe, I feel this pressure because I tend to be a little bit of a perfectionist and probably have an undiagnosed case of OCD. But, I want this video to come out incredible not only to be proud of the work that I helped create but also because I want to make sure that I tell the start of a story that I think is incredible important to tell.

I will definitely keep you all updated on our editing process. Today, we only organized and labeled all the clips. Tomorrow our plan is to start actually piecing the video together. Our plan is to edit individual scenes in the film opening and then to finish this sucker!

Matthew Liebman
